This page began its life as a page about remembering Iraq, and has now become a page about remembering the lives that have been lost through war and why we work towards a future where conflict is resolved through non-violent means.

In peace, for peace, for taxes for peace not war,
The conscience team

Conscientious Objector
by Edna St. Vincent Millay

(1892 - 1950)

I shall die, but
that is all that I shall do for Death.
I hear him leading his horse out of the stall;
I hear the clatter on the barn-floor.
He is in haste; he has business in Cuba,
business in the Balkans,
many calls to make this morning.
But I will not hold the bridle
while he cinches the girth.
And he may mount by himself:
I will not give him a leg up.

"Futility"

Always it woke him, even in France,
Until this morning and this snow.
If anything might rouse him now
The kind old sun will know.

Iraq Deaths Estimator

“I’ve worked for charities and good causes, but somehow none of them felt as important as knowing that I’m working towards peace. It’s such a fundamental idea that reaches across cultures, countries, problems, lifestyles… whatever someone’s political inclination, the agreement that peace is desirable seems to be universal. We may not agree about how to work towards such an elusive and complex goal as ‘peace’, but knowing I’m doing what I can means everything to me.”

Conscience plans to build on this work to create a webpage which reminds us all of why we within the peace sector work towards peace and why we ask the world around us to do the same.

In order to achieve this aim we are asking our members, peace workers, peace activists, and the wider public to send us pictures, photos, quotes, and anything that reminds you of why peace is the answer. If you have stories about war and peace then send them to us we would be happy to hear them. Help us to build our page of peace!
