campaigns for the legal right for those who have a conscientious objection to war to have the military part of their taxes spent on peace building initiatives.
Through lobbying, campaigning and dialogue we engage with MPs and government departments with the goal of a change in the law giving conscientious objectors the right to pay for peace not war. We also promote non-military security initiatives which are more effective and cost-effective than the traditional military approach to security.
Some people choose to withhold the military portion of their taxes until they have been assured that it will not be spent on the military. These people are usually prosecuted and occasionally sent to prison. conscience supports and publicises the cases of those who resist war taxes in this way.

has a small paid staff and a number of dedicated interns and volunteers. Our Campaigns & Parliamentary Officer works to build support for conscience in Parliament and co-ordinates members' lobbying efforts. Gaining the backing of more MPs is vital to achieving peace tax legislation. The Campaigns Officer also supports war tax resisters and supports members campaigning in their own regions.
Our Development Officer works to attract new members and raise the profile of the Campaign. An increasing membership puts us in a better position to lobby for change. The Development Officer is also our fundraiser, produces our quarterly newsletter and other publications, and oversees our membership records.
Our Projects Officer is currently working on networking with government departments and other NGOs in the peace and security field.
Vital to the effectiveness and smooth-running of the campaign are members who help with newsletter mailings, proof-reading, responding to members' requests for campaign materials and other office jobs. If you live within reach of London, you are very welcome to join us for the occasional morning or afternoon. We provide refreshments and will refund your expenses. Contact us at if you want to know more.
