conscience was protesting outside the Iraq Inquiry when Prime Minister Gordon Brown gave evidence on 5 March 2010 together with many other peace groups. We were keeping up the message that spending on the military is NOT the answer to conflict!

Have a peek at our photos of the event on Flickr by clicking here.

We were also protesting outside Gordon Brown's Afghanistan Conference on 28 January 2010 (see photos, left) for the use of non-military security methods to be used in Afghanistan to bring about real security, democracy and prosperity, because the war isn't working.

Little over a month after the four US domestic flights were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Centre and the US Defense Departments Headquarters, the US and its allies invaded Afghanistan. The war was meant to capture Osama Bin Laden, destroy the operational capacity of al-Qaeda, remove the Taliban from power and bring peace and prosperity to Afghanistan. However, today, Afghanistan cannot rightly be described as democratic, secure or prosperous, the Taliban are far from being defeated and Bin Laden has not been captured. Furthermore, trends in the areas of democracy, security and economics suggest that the situation is getting worse rather than better.

The failures in Afghanistan are occurring because coalition forces have only pursued narrow military objectives in an attempt pacify the Taliban. Although the focus of the role of the international coalition in the country is now broader, the military remains the primary instrument through which success in Afghanistan is sought.

conscience believes that now is the time to present real alternatives to the use of the military to resolve problems in Afghanistan. We are currently writing a report on these alternatives and hope to publish the report in the coming months.

Taxman Tom and the Grim Reaper "Taxman Tom" makes a visit to HMRC and is followed by a rather sinister character.

Remembering Iraq

Conscience: taxes for peace not war, has put together a webpage remembering the invasion of Iraq. It includes the poem “Conscientious Objector” by Edna St. Vincent Millay. This poem helps to remind conscience about why it campaigns. You can view the page by clicking here.

Conscience plans to build on this work to create a webpage which reminds us all of why we within the peace sector work towards peace and why we ask the world around us to do the same.

In order to achieve this aim we are asking our members, peace workers, peace activists, and the wider public to send us pictures, photos, quotes, and anything that reminds you of why peace is the answer. If you have stories about war and peace then send them to us we would be happy to hear them. Help us to build our page of peace!
