Education for Peace

Below you'll find our booklets, as part of our commitment to educating and informing individuals about conscientious objection, Conscience has developed two comprehensive booklets under our Education for Peace Programme. These resources aim to shed light on the importance of conscientious objection both to military service and military taxation.

/1. Conscientious objection to military service

This booklet, completed in May 2023, provides an in-depth look at the historical and legal aspects of conscientious objection to military service. It covers:

  • The ethical, moral, political, and religious reasons individuals object to military service.

  • Historical accounts of conscientious objectors during the First and Second World Wars.

  • The legal rights and protections available for conscientious objectors worldwide.

  • The current state of conscientious objection in different countries and its challenges.

/2. Conscientious objection to military taxation

Published in July 2024, this booklet explores the right to object to military taxation and redirect tax contributions toward peacebuilding initiatives. It includes:

  • The ethical and legal arguments for refusing to fund war through taxation.

  • The concept of 'financial conscription' and its implications.

  • The history of conscientious objection to military taxation and war tax resistance movements.

  • Alternative ways tax revenue could be allocated to promote peace.

These booklets serve as essential educational tools for individuals, educators, and advocates who seek a deeper understanding of conscientious objection. For more information, visit our main Education for Peace Programme page to view our factsheets.
